General surgery
Thoughtful preparation. Attentive follow-through.
Dr. McKisson performs common soft-tissue procedures with a clear plan for preparation, monitoring, recovery, and follow-up.
What to expect
Before, during, and after surgery
We want you to understand the plan, know what will happen while your pet is with us, and feel prepared to support recovery at home.
Before surgery
A plan based on your pet
We review the recommended procedure, relevant risks, preparation instructions, and any testing that should be completed before anesthesia.
During surgery
Careful monitoring throughout
Dr. McKisson and the veterinary team monitor and care for your pet throughout the procedure. A CO2 surgical laser may be used when appropriate.
After surgery
A supported recovery
Most routine procedures are outpatient surgeries. Your pet is monitored during recovery and goes home when it is safe, with instructions for care and follow-up.
Appropriate care matters
What we handle—and when we refer
Good judgment includes knowing which procedures belong in a general practice and which are better managed by a specialist.
Common procedures
Dr. McKisson performs a range of general soft-tissue surgeries, including:
- Spay procedures
- Neuter procedures
- Removal of certain masses or growths
- Other appropriate outpatient soft-tissue procedures
Specialty referrals
Some operations require specialized equipment, advanced monitoring, or expertise beyond what a small general practice can responsibly provide.
When referral is the safer or more appropriate choice, we will tell you plainly and help direct you to an appropriate specialty provider.
Understanding removed tissue
Why laboratory analysis may matter
When a mass or growth is removed, we may recommend submitting the tissue to a laboratory for examination. Appearance alone cannot reliably identify every growth.
Laboratory analysis provides better information about the cells in the tissue and whether additional monitoring or treatment should be considered. We will explain the value of testing so you can make an informed choice.
